Some History ![]()
Poodles are perhaps the most ancient of dog breeds. Small and white were the first poodles. The first illustrations of poodles were carved on Roman monuments around 40 AD according to Lydia Hopkins in her book The Complete Poodle. In German Pudel is the word for Water Dog. Poodles were found in three types, the French, the Russian, and the German. These cam in three sizes, small, medium, and large. It's "cousin" the Irish Water Spaniel has very similar features. The poodle coat can be wiry, wooly, or corded. Some people believe the corded poodle is a separate variety of poodle. Poodles were imported into England as hunting and working dogs. they were used in France for draught dogs, retrievers, truffle huntes, and circus actors. these French poodles were the larger sized dogs. There was also a Russian Poodle built more like a greyhound. The first poodles were probably white but later the aristocracy preferred the black ones. The other colors we now see in poodles(cream, apricot, silver, red, cafe auliat, chocolate, and blue are dilutions and mixings of the white and black.
Health ![]()
Poodles are prone to several genetic diseases. Hip dysphasia is a result of poor breeding and is regulated by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA). Eye diseases poodles may get are cataracts, glaucoma, and retinal disease. The Canine Eye Registration Foundation (CERF) tests for these. A skin disease which grows skin cycts is called Sebaceous Adentitis (SA). Your vet can take a skin sample and send it off to a larger lab to test for this and Von Willebrands Disease. This is a blood disease which requires a blood sample. Don't be scared off by these. The incidents of these diseases occurring in a well-bred pup are rare. Choose your breeder wisely. Celebrity Standard Poodles has a clean record of genetic disease. None of our pups have had genetic problems. We choose our dams ans sires wisely. We guarantee a genetically sound pup for one year.

Nutrition is Important ![]()
Additives to the food of your Standard are a great way to make sure the dog gets all the vitamins and minerals it requires. At Celebrity Standard Poodles we feed Puppy Chow and add powdered milk, nutritonal yeast, and a can of high quality dog food. We feed this once a day and have regular dry puppy chow all the time. We believe that the poodles should have food to eat whenever they wish. Also we give our poodles fresh fruits and vegetables. Poodles love brussel sprouts! Plain yogurt is a good way to insure good digestive health. Olive oil helps to keep fleas off, garlic does too. When we have puppies I feed a suppliment called Missing Link. It has everything from Spirolina to extra vitamins and minerals. It seems to really make super puppies who are really healthy. You can purchase this from Jeffers Vet Supply. Our adult poodles also get raw chicken necks. Top breeders from all over the U.S. are feeding their dogs a raw diet which is more natural for the dog's natural stomach enzymes. Poodles REALLY love chicken necks. Some of the other benefits are that there are less parasite infestations, more muscle put on, less fecal waste, and bigger smiles!
