Known as the Butterfly Spaniel because of the huge fringed ears. The Papillon is a guaranteed ice breaker for the proud owner. People 'ooh' and 'aah' their attitude and beauty.

No one really knows where the breed originated. It is not a scaled down version of any larger breed. It was once known as the Continental Toy Spaniel but then it was larger and more heavily marked with drop ears like other spaniels. It has existed in its present form since the days of the French revolution. Papillons were painted in many court scenes of that day.

The breed is known for its loving disposition and trainability. Papillons do extremely well in obedience and agility. They are among the most teachable of canines, within the limitations of their 5 to 8 pound average size. They earn more obedience titles every year than all other toy breeds. They are easily housebroken if you are consistent in your training.

The coat is often referred to as wash and wear. If brushed once a week most things will totally brush out without a bath. When bathing only shampoo is necessary to keep the coat in great condition.

Papillons have very few genetic problems. The two that are more prevalent are PR.A. (Progressive Retinal Atrophy) and 'floating kneecaps' (luxated patella). The P.RA. is occurring most often in Paps over 7 years of age.

ELMAC has been breeding and producing quality papillons for over 25 years. in 1996 the top winning Papillon bitch, Ch. Elrac's Naughty Marietta, was bred and owned by us. Her litter brother, American and Canadian Oh. Etrac's Cabaret, is winning groups in Canada.

The puppies are home bred and raised. The adults live with me and sleep on my bed. I am a very active member in the local Papillon club and am a member of the National club. I attend most
dog shows in Southern California and frequently travel to Northern California, Arizona and Nevada to attend shows.

All the breeding stock over the age of 2 is frequently examined for P.R.A. and patella problems. At this time NONE of the breeding stock has tested positive for these problems.

Occasionally there are pet or show quality puppies available. There also are proven studs. Occasionally there are more mature dogs to be placed in a loving home. All pet quality must be neutered.
