AutoPage-Plus makes use of a variety of file types/formats, directories & sub-directories. This help section is designed to give you a basic under standing of the various files types, directories & sub-directories used by the AutoPage-Plus system.File Types
Distinguishing one file type/format from another is easily accomplished by looking at the filename extension. The filename extension is generally the 3-4 characters located at the end of the filename after the dot or period ( . )The file types used by the AutoPage-Plus system are as follows:
.html or .htm
Directories
Filenames ending with .html or .htm extensions are what is known as HTML files or HTML documents. They are the actual webpage files themselves. HTML files are nothing more than standard ASCII text files which contain the appropriate HTML coding to tell your Web Browser how to properly display of your webpage. AutoPage-Plus takes care of all the coding within these files for you.One special HTML file you should be aware of is the index.html file. This is your homepage file. When visitors come to your website, the web server automatically looks for this file and then serves it up to the visitors web browser. Thus there is no need for them to type in the filename index.html.
.mid, wav & .au
Filenames ending .mid, wav & .au extensions are sound files. AutoPage-Plus provides a list of pre-selected ".mid" (also known as MIDI files) for to you to choose from. You may also choose to upload and use your own sound files. AutoPagePlus is design to work with all three files types..jpg or .gif
Filenames ending .jpg or .gif extensions are images or photo files. ".jpg" file types are generally used for displaying photographs where as ".gif" file types are used for displaying graphic images, logos & line drawings.
When working with Directories it is important that you understand that the terms Directory & Folder are synonymous. The term Folder is often used by Mac and Windows-95 users whereas the term Directory is often used by DOS, Unix & Windows-3.11 users. Throughout the AutoPage-Plus system only the term Directory will be use. However, it should be understood that a Directory and a Folder are the same thing.AutoPage-Plus makes use of various directories to store your html, separators, photos, and sound files in. Your html files (actual webpages) are stored in your web (also known as root or home) directory. Beneath your web directory is a sub-directory named autopage. The autopage sub-directory contains a "start.html" file which is the entry page to the AutoPage-Plus system. The uploads directory is also located beneath the web directory. The uploads directory is where the various files are stored that your will be uploading to your website. (ie; photos/images, backgrounds, separators, email images, link images, sound files,etc.).
The following represents a standard website directory structure containing the various directories & sub-directories used by AutoPage-Plus to store your files:
web (this is your root or home directory where your html files are stored) | |- - - autopage (this is a sub-directory of you home directory) | |- - - start.hrml (entry page to the AutoPage-Plus system) | | |- - - uploads (this is the sub-directory where all the files you upload will be stored)| | |- - - photo1.jpg | |- - - image1.gif | | |- index.html (this is your homepage html file) |- page2.html (this is your page2 html file) |- page3.html (this is your page3 html file) |- page4.html (this is your page4 html file) |- page5.html (this is your page5 html file) |- page6.html (this is your page6 html file) |- page7.html (this is your page7 html file) |- page8.html (this is your page8 html file) |- page9.html (this is your page9 html file) |- page_10.html (this is your page10 html file) and so on .....
Note: The web server Is Case Sensitive. It is very important when working with files and/or directories, that you utilize the exact case in which the file or directory name is in. Some operating systems like Windows-95 are not case sensitive and even allow spaces in the file or directory names. This is not the case on the internet.
When naming files and/or directories care must be taken to assure that the name used consists of contiguous alphanumeric characters with No blank spaces, quotes, slashes, etc..
In order to avoid confusion, we highly recommend, any files located on your local computer's harddrive that you intend on uploading to your website, you should rename in contiguous all lower case or all upper case alphanumeric characters. Use those all lowercase or all upper case names for all filename entries into the AutoPage-Plus system.
