A little about the Breed. .
English Cocker Spaniels are a VERY special breed. They are highly intelligent, and are VERY people oriented. They are NOT the breed for you if you do not have someone home at least part of the day, if you are not prepared to brush and comb them at least once a day, if you are not prepared to or do not have the time to take a puppy to obedience classes. You should start out with puppy socialization classes when the pup first arrives in your home, and the Breeder of your puppy will give you guidelines on the type of classes your puppy should be involved with at various stages of it's life. If you are not prepared to make a committment to grooming and training your English Cocker puppy, then maybe this is not the Breed for you.

Ebony - How we started in this Breed!
Arcata English Cockers came into being in 1987 when I bought my first English Cocker--Lorbob's Alltime Ebony, (black girl--original name huh!) We were living in Singapore and a friend had English Cockers. When her bitch had a litter I was drawn to the only black in the litter...a fiesty baby girl called Ebony. Once the pups were 3 weeks old I started visting on a daily basis and became more attached to Ebony. When the pups were around ten weeks old I brought my husband to visit and of course, Ebony came running to me! I told my husband that she had picked me....later I did confess that I had been visiting and that Ebony and I had "bonded"! He agreed that she had always seemed destined for us. She is now 14 years old (as of 8/21/2001) and still thinks she is a young pup! She swims as soon as ice melts on the pond and continues all Summer and Fall. She has been an absolute delight and hopefully will be for many more years. The photo above was taken when Ebony was around eight years of age and we were living in Texas, now we are living in New Hampshire and don't have a swimming pool, but we have a huge pond and a winding brook that is inhabitated by rock trout that Ebony loves to frighten and chase. I think by now they know she is not a threat, but we won't let her know ! Ebony, celebrated her birthday by taking a swim in the pond, chasing a wild duck who was minding it's own business in the pond, tackling one of our German Shepherds for a stick thrown into the pond (Ebony won!) and finally eating a McDonalds cheeseburger and fries, then she took an afternoon nap! All our other EC's joined in a chorus of Happy Birthday later in the day with lots of howls! **Ebony passed over to the Rainbow Bridge on December 17th, 2001. Rest well my sweet girl.**

Am./Can. Ch. Arcata Black Chariot of Fire
Also known as Charki, this boy is my dream come true. A typical "merry English Cocker", he not only excels in the showring, but at home, in the car, on the bed. He loves the whole world! He has a very sweet and even temperament and I'm convinced if he could talk he would be telling jokes all day. Charki is by Ch. Kendras Obsidianboy of Arcata (aka Obi) x Chelsea's Sasha of Arcata and was handled to his Championship by Barbara Heckerman (professional handler extrodinaire!)

Puppies

Arcata Puppies love our German Shepherd and he loves them! Once the pups are about 4 weeks old they are allowed to run free in the kitchen several times a day and Sultan is alway there waiting. He is very gentle and loving with them even when they are nipping his ears and muzzle! UPDATE! Sultan is now a fully fledged "working" member of the Manchester Police K9 Unit and even has his own ID. He STILL loves puppies...but frisks them first!

Cassidy
Ch. Wittersham's Winsome Lass
Cassidy is our foundation b*tch and the comediene of the household. She loves the showring and would perform for the audience as if they were there only to see her. She is now a grandmother. Her daughter Ch. Arcata Fascinating Rhythm (aka Ella) whelped her first litter on January 4th, 1998.
